EJ Obiena places third in German indoor meet

After winning gold at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships last Saturday, Olympian and pole vaulter EJ Obiena once again finished on the podium after rushing back to Germany for the INIT Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe.

Obiena cleared 5.70 meters to place third, finishing behind Norway’s Sondre Guttormsen and American Cole Walsh in the competition held Sunday (Germany time).

He needed two attempts to clear 5.45 meters before skipping the 5.60-meter mark. Obiena then cleared 5.70 meters on his first try but failed in his subsequent attempt at 5.78 meters. He skipped that height afterward but eventually ran out of attempts at 5.84 meters.

Guttormsen topped the event after clearing 5.84 meters, while Walsh finished second with a clearance of 5.78 meters.

“Running on airplane food and a couple hours of shut eye. Thankful and blessed to walk away with the bronze here,” Obiena wrote in an Instagram post.

“Definitely the toughest back-to-back I have ever done and hopefully would ever do.”

At the Asian Indoor Championships, Obiena also cleared 5.70 meters to secure the gold medal.
