Alex Eala through to Indian Wells Round of 64 with first-round bye

Alex Eala at the Dubai Tennis Championships Round of 16

Alex Eala is set to return to the hard courts as she officially begins her campaign at the Indian Wells Open.

The world No. 32 Filipina tennis standout has secured a first-round bye, advancing directly to the Round of 64. She now awaits the winner between Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine and Zhang Shuai of China for her opening match in the tournament.

Eala is seeking redemption following her quarterfinal exit at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where she fell against world no. 4 Coco Gauff of USA with a 6-0, 6-2 loss.

The 20-year-old Eala is among the biggest stars set to compete at the Indian Wells Open, headlined by top seed and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Also featured in the stacked WTA 1000 draw are Maya Joint, Naomi Osaka, Victoria Mboko, Emma Raducanu, and Coco Gauff, all vying for the prestigious title.

Should Eala advance past her Round of 64 opponent, she is poised for a potential rematch with Gauff, who—like her—also received a first-round bye in the tournament.
