Alex Eala outlasts Dayana Yastremska to reach Indian Wells Open Round of 32
Alexandra "Alex" Eala battled past Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, on Saturday (Philippine time) to advance to the Round of 32 of the Indian Wells Open.
After a tight opening set, Yastremska took control in the second, racing to a 4-1 lead before pulling away to force a deciding set.
Eala, making her debut in the WTA 1000 tournament, held a 4-3 lead in the third before Yastremska surged ahead by winning the next two games to grab a 5-4 advantage.
With her back against the wall, the Filipina world No. 32 regained her composure and won the next two games to move within a game of the victory.
In the 12th game of the third set, the two players battled through six deuces before Eala finally converted her fourth match point, with a series of late errors from Yastremska helping seal the hard-fought win.
Eala will next face Coco Gauff in the next round of the tournament.
