Who is Julia Grabher? Alex Eala's Round of 32 foe at Linz Open
Alex Eala faces a tall task in her first game of the clay season this year as she is set to take on hometown bet Julia Grabher in the Round of 32 of the Linz Open scheduled on Tuesday at 5 p.m. (Manila time) in Austria.
This will mark the first time that the Filipina standout and the Austrian ace will face off in a WTA match with the winner locking horns with fourth-seeded Jelena Ostapenko in the Round of 16.
On paper, Eala appears to hold the advantage over Grabher. The Philippine bet is currently ranked No. 46 and reached a career-high of No. 29 last month while the Austrian star is presently at No. 87 and had a career-high of No. 54 three years ago.
The Linz Open is a familiar ground for the 29-year-old Grabher. She made her main draw debut in the same event in 2019, earning a wildcard entry into the main stage before losing to Viktoria Kuzmova 6-4, 6-2 in the Round of 32.
Grabher has yet to win a major title, but has been in the professional scene for some time. She saw action in the 2024 Paris Olympics, but bowed to Emma Navarro, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round to exit the Summer Games early.
Grabher is coming off two clay events in Turkey, but suffered early exits on both occasions.
She will now test her mettle against the 20-year-old Eala, who will open her clay-court swing after a busy stretch on the hard courts.
Eala was fresh off a much-needed break following her stints at Miami Open, Indian Wells Open, Dubai Tennis Championships, Qatar Open, Abu Dhabi Open, Philippine Women's Open, Australian Open, and ASB Classic.
