Alex Eala falls to Jelena Ostapenko, exits Linz Open in Round of 16
Alexandra “Alex” Eala fell to Jelena Ostapenko, 6-4, 7-5, in the Round of 16 of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz Open on Wednesday.
Eala nearly forced a deciding set after racing to a 4-0 lead in the second frame, but Ostapenko mounted a comeback. The Filipina regained her footing and moved within a game of extending the match, but Ostapenko showed her championship composure by winning six straight games to seal the victory.
In the opening set, Eala also held a 4-2 advantage before the 2017 French Open champion took the next four games to claim the set.
Prior to this match, Eala defeated Julia Grabher, 6-4, 6-3, in the Round of 32.
The win marked Ostapenko’s first victory over Eala in a WTA tournament.
Eala, however, is set to return to action next week at the Stuttgart Open in Germany.
