Cyclist Krog, tracksters Wangkay and Cesar bound for Youth Olympic Games

Cyclist Maritanya Krog and track athletes Pi Durden Wangkay and Naomi Cesar are among the first three of nine Filipino athletes set to compete in the Youth Olympic Games this October in Senegal.

Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino said the athletes were nominated by their respective national sports associations as the country awaits six more entries.

The International Olympic Committee allocated nine universality places for the Philippines, including two slots in athletics, one women’s slot in cycling for road race and individual time trial, one male and one female berth in artistic gymnastics, one male slot in windsurfing, one berth in women’s taijiquan, and swimming entries in the men’s 100-meter butterfly and women’s 10-meter breaststroke.

Krog earned her nomination after finishing sixth in the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain last year. Wangkay, meanwhile, won the gold medal in the boys’ 200 meters, while Cesar captured silver in the girls’ 800 meters in the same competition.
