‘So easy’: Song Yadong shocked by effortless submission of Deiveson Figueiredo

Forcing a Brazilian to tap out is considered one of the rarest feats in mixed martial arts. So when Song Yadong wrapped his arms around Deiveson Figueiredo's neck on Saturday night, even he was surprised by how effortlessly the finish materialized.

“I knew he’s a very good grappler, but I didn’t expect that he’d tap so quickly, you know,” Song admitted during the UFC Macau post-fight press conference. “I didn’t use my full power—I just did a little twist. He tapped, that’s it. I win. So easy.”

The end came in the second frame when the Chinese contender stuffed a desperate takedown attempt from Figueiredo. Song then locked in a tight guillotine choke that forced the former flyweight champion to surrender.

Asked what he was most proud of during his spectacular bounce-back victory at the Galaxy Arena, the 28-year-old bantamweight star had one thing in mind. He rejoiced about finally hitting Team Alpha Male's most famous weapon on the big stage.

“The guillotine,” Song told reporters. “I finally did it in a fight. I do it a lot in sparring, but I finally did it in the cage. I’m so proud of myself.”

Watching from the wings, his longtime mentor and UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber beamed with pride.

For Faber, the performance proved the Harbin native is fully capable of carrying the torch for their legendary Sacramento-based gym.

“He's continuing the lineage, and the bar is getting higher, and we're moving with it,” Faber said. “We've got a lot of guys coming, but, yeah, Song is at the top of the heap right now.”
