Alex Eala wins WTA 125 Birmingham Open title after outlasting Nikola Bartunkova in thriller

Alex Eala's title run at the Birmingham Open came with a hefty reward as the Filipina tennis star is set to earn more than P2 million in prize money after ruling the WTA 125 tournament on Sunday night at Edgbaston Priory Club in England.

The 21-year-old Filipina tennis sensation was pushed to her limits before eking out a hard-fought 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Czech star Nikola Bartunkova, capturing her second WTA title in as many years.

Eala's championship run came with a lucrative reward as she is set to pocket $33,650 (roughly P2.08 million) in prize money.

The victory also ended the Filipina's so-called 'Czech curse,' as she finally broke through against a Czech opponent after dropping her previous 13 matches against players from the powerhouse nation.

Eala, now ranked no. 33 in the world, and Bartunkova split the first two sets before the Philippine bet raced to a 4-2 lead before the latter equalized the match at 5-all. But Eala hung tough and won the next two games with Bartunkova's attack error sealing the victory for the Filipina.

The win gave Eala some measure of redemption after a tough run in the clay swing, where she absorbed multiple early exits and setbacks.
