Sports icons Onyok Velasco and Ramon Fernandez headlined the seven athletes officially inducted into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame during the enshrinement ceremony held last Saturday at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) House inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

Velasco, a boxing legend, won the silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, while Fernandez cemented his status as one of Philippine basketball’s greatest players as a member of the national team that captured gold in the 1973 FIBA Asia Championship and silver in the 1990 Asian Games. Fernandez is also a 19-time PBA champion and four-time PBA Most Valuable Player.

Joining Velasco and Fernandez in the Hall of Fame’s fifth batch of enshrinees were Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta (para powerlifting), Cecil Mamiit (tennis), Bea Lucero-Lhuillier (taekwondo and gymnastics), Isidro del Prado (athletics), and Eduardo Pacheco (posthumous, basketball and football).

“Your achievements have transformed the national imagination,” PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio told the enshrinees during the ceremony at the newly renovated PSC House, which was refurbished in time for the event.

“Salamat sa hindi pagsuko. Salamat sa puso at alab. Just like the flag that you have worn so proudly, kayo ang maningning na mga bituin at araw ng bayang Pilipinas kailan pa ma’y di magdidilim. Mabuhay ang atletang Pilipino,” Gregorio added.

The next batch of Hall of Fame inductees will be selected in 2028.
