It’s not every day a rising Filipina star gets to share the court with a living legend, but that’s exactly what happened for Alex Eala as she is set to partner with Venus Williams at the Bad Homburg Open in Germany.

The 21-year-old Eala and 46-year-old Williams will begin their doubles journey on Wednesday, battling the tandem of Alexandra Osborne and Catherine Harrison in the Round of 16.

Williams, the elder sister of fellow tennis great Serena Williams, is making her return to grass-court action for the first time since Wimbledon 2023, where she bowed out in the Round of 128 to Elina Svitolina.

But even that early exit did little to dim her stature.

Williams is a seven-time Grand Slam singles champions and 14-time Grand Slam doubles champion. She was also a former world No. 1 player in both singles and doubles.

Currently ranked No. 471 in singles and No. 120 in doubles, Williams has won at least one title in every Grand Slam event. In singles, she won two titles in the Australian Open, one in the French Open, two in the US Open, and five in Wimbledon.

Williams is also an exceptional player in the doubles, capturing six titles in Wimbledon, four in the the Australian Open, and two each from the French Open and US Open.

Not as active on the WTA Tour as during her peak years, Williams last lifted a Grand Slam trophy in 2016, when she and Serena captured the Wimbledon doubles crown with a dominant victory over Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova in the final.

Nearly a decade later, Williams is back on the grass courts and looking to add another title to her decorated resume, this time with Eala as her partner at the Bad Homburg Open.

Eala just wrapped up her Bad Homburg Open singles run after losing to Elise Mertens in the Round of 32 on early Tuesday.
