Alex Eala crushes Renata Zarazua to reach second round at Wimbledon
Alex Eala opened her 2026 Wimbledon campaign in dominant fashion, overwhelming Mexico's Renata Zarazua, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round early Wednesday as continued her impressive grass court run.
The win was Eala's first-ever main draw win at Wimbledon. It was her second main draw win at a Grand Slam, following her first round victory at the US Open last year.

The Filipina ace, seeded 29th at the tournament, booked her place in the second round, where a blockbuster clash with former world No. 1 and 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams could be on the cards if the latter prevails over Maya Joint in her first round match.
Seeded in a Grand Slam event for the first time, Eala took control early on and dominated right from the get-go by storming to a 3-1 cushion in Set 1. The 21-year-old Filipina encountered some resistance in the next two games but dug deep to fend off Zarazua's challenge and extend her advantage to 5-1.
In the following game, Zarazua—Eala's doubles partner at last year's French Open—put up another fight and took a 40-30 lead. But the Filipina responded by winning the next three points, punctuating the set with a forehand winner for a 6-1 Set 1 victory.
The Filipina once again surged to a 5-1 cushion, but Zarazua refused to go quietly, taking the next game in a sweep fashion to breathe life into her comeback attempt. Any hopes of a rally, however, were quickly extinguished. Zarazua committed back-to-back attack errors, sending consecutive shots into the net to hand Eala a 40-15 lead and two match points.
The Filipina then hammered a forehand winner to seal the straight-sets victory and book her place in the second round.
The victory allowed Eala to improve on her Wimbledon campaign last year, when she bowed out in the opening round after falling to then defending champion Barbora Krejcikova in the Round of 128.
