Ateneo to provide assistance to those named in additional CIDG recommendation
The Ateneo de Manila University said it will provide assistance to those named in the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group's (CIDG) recent recommendation to file homicide and reckless imprudence charges against former Ateneo Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin and eight others in connection with the drowning deaths of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
On Wednesday, the Department of Justice confirmed it had received the CIDG's supplemental recommendation, which followed an earlier referral seeking the filing of charges under the Anti-Hazing Act over alleged violations of Republic Act No. 11053.
“The University has been informed that criminal charges were recommended to be filed against several members of our community,” the Ateneo said in a memorandum signed by university president Fr. Roberto Yap, SJ.
“The University respects the legal process and will continue to cooperate with the authorities. It will provide whatever assistance and support to these persons as they exercise their rights and defend themselves throughout the process.”
The university also urged its community to “allow the legal process to proceed free from speculation, prejudice, or trial by publicity.”
“Our justice system demands that facts be tested, evidence be weighed fairly, and the rights of all parties be respected,” it added.
“As we continue to grieve the tragic loss of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, let us remain united in prayer for their families, for those who now face these legal proceedings, and for our entire University community. May we all be guided by truth, justice, compassion, and hope in the days ahead.”
