Alex Eala overcomes Maya Joint, reaches Wimbledon Round of 32

Alexandra "Alex" Eala rallied past Australia's Maya Joint, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, in the second round of Wimbledon on Thursday (Philippine time) to book a spot in the Round of 32 of the grass-court Grand Slam.

Eala needed nearly two hours to complete the comeback victory, avenging her loss to Joint at the Eastbourne Open last year.

After a hard-fought opening set, Eala seized control in the second, building a 3-1 lead before Joint trimmed the deficit with another game. The Filipina, however, responded by winning the next three games to level the match and force a deciding set.

The final set was all Eala as she dominated Joint with a 6-0 shutout to seal the victory.

Eala will next face five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek for a place in the fourth round.

The Filipina star will return to the court later Thursday for the doubles competition, where she and Czech partner Nikola Bartunkova will take on Sofia Kenin and Jelena Ostapenko.
