Alex Eala proud of projected WTA ranking boost after reaching DC Open semifinals

Alexandra “Alex” Eala is set to receive a significant boost in the WTA rankings after advancing to the semifinals of the Mubadala DC Open.

Eala, currently ranked world No. 28 — a career-high — is guaranteed 195 ranking points after reaching the tournament’s final four with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over world No. 10 Elina Svitolina.

In an interview with the Tennis Channel, Eala was asked about her projected rise in the rankings, with the 21-year-old expected to climb to a new career-high of world No. 25.

“That sounds amazing. That sounds so surreal,” a surprised Eala said.

“That sounds actually crazy, but I'm super proud of it.”

The WTA rankings are determined by the points players earn in tournaments over a rolling 52-week period. The rankings are officially updated at the end of each competition week, with the latest update expected on Monday.

As a WTA 500 event, the DC Open awards 500 ranking points to its champion. Should Eala advance to the final, she would be guaranteed 325 ranking points.

Eala will take on Naomi Osaka in the semifinals on Saturday (early Sunday, Philippine time).
