Senators honor Alex Eala for historic WTA title

Several senators on Tuesday honored tennis star Alex Eala for her historic victory at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open in Washington, D.C., where she captured the first Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour singles title by a Filipino.

The championship also marked the first WTA Tour singles crown of her career.

Under proposed Senate Resolution No. 560, Senator Bam Aquino congratulated and commended Eala for her achievement.

"Alex Eala's victory further demonstrates that excellence in Philippine sports extends far beyond traditionally supported disciplines, underscoring the need for the Philippines to broaden investments in athlete development so that talented Filipinos in all sports are given the opportunity to reach their fullest potential and bring honor to the nation," Aquino said.

"It is fitting for the Senate of the Philippines to recognize individuals whose achievements bring honor and pride to the nation and whose stories inspire excellence, resilience, and hope among the Filipino people," he added.

Senator Joel Villanueva also filed proposed Senate Resolution No. 554 to congratulate and commend Eala for her "outstanding achievement," saying it brought "honor and distinction" to the country while strengthening national pride.

"Eala's historic achievement further enhances the Philippines' standing in the international sporting community and serves as a lasting testament to the excellence, resilience, discipline, and world-class potential of the Filipino athlete, while inspiring future generations to pursue greatness in sports and in service of the nation," Villanueva said.

"Beyond her remarkable athletic accomplishments, Eala has exemplified discipline, perseverance, humility, patriotism, and unwavering dedication to excellence, embodying the finest qualities of the Filipino and bringing immense honor, pride, and inspiration to the nation," he added.

The proposed resolutions will be presented for adoption during Tuesday's session.

Eala made history after defeating top-seeded American Jessica Pegula to become the first Filipino to win a WTA Tour singles title.— MCG, GMA News
