Filipinos celebrate Alex Eala's first WTA title in DC Open

Filipinos all over the world celebrated the historic victory of tennis sensation Alex Eala at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open in the United States.

It marked Eala's first-ever Women's Tennis Association (WTA) championship title—and the first WTA title for a Filipino player. Eala defeated World No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the rain-delayed final, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.

In a report by EJ Gomez on 24 Oras, Filipinos gathered at several sports bars across Metro Manila to witness Eala make history.

One fan said the late-night watch was well worth it.

"Watching her at this hour feels different. It was worth it. The overtime at work and the long hours writing pleadings were all worth it because we got to witness Alex win."

Another supporter admitted not being an avid tennis follower but said Eala's achievement was a source of national pride.

"I'm not really a tennis fan, but I feel like if she wins this, it's a huge achievement for us Filipinos. And yes, I'm rooting for her. Go, Alex! Go, Alex!"

Following her victory, Eala, the new World No. 20, thanked her supporters for standing behind her throughout her campaign.

"To all my supporters, thank you, guys. Thank you to all my supporters, especially the Filipino community here in D.C., back home, and wherever you are in the world. I really feel all the love."
