Ateneo whips NU in straight sets

The Ateneo Lady Eagles delivered a statement win on Saturday, shutting out the NU Lady Bulldogs, 25-22 25-16 25-17, at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan.

Maddie Madayag led Ateneo with 13 points, while Julia Samonte and Jho Maraguinot added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

It was a balanced attack for the Lady Eagles, as Bea De Leon and Kat Tolentino also chipped in a combined 17 points.

With the two teams dead even in attack points, Ateneo capitalized on their blocking and service, tallying 11 denials to NU’s three, while also serving 14 aces to the Lady Bulldogs’ three.

Jaja Santiago was the only NU player in double figures with 16 off 13 kills, two blocks, and an ace. Only five more players scored for NU, all of them combining for just 17 more points.

With the win, Ateneo now shares an identical 6-3 win-loss slate with NU and FEU, while La Salle was a game ahead at 7-2. — DVM, GMA News
