La Salle downs Ateneo in four-setter; UST, NU, UP pick up wins in volleyball opener
De La Salle University took down Ateneo de Manila University, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 to open their women's volleyball campaign in UAAP Season 84 on Thursday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Baby Jyne Soreño listed 17 points off 13 attacks and three blocks, while Alleiah Malaluan registered a triple-double of 15 points, 15 excellent digs, and 11 excellent receptions for the Taft-based squad.
Ateneo's Faith Nisperos, meanwhile, had 24 points off 19 attacks in the opening day loss. Dani Ravena had 23 excellent digs and 11 excellent receptions.
Earlier, the University of Santo Tomas opened the volleyball tournament with a win over Far Easter University, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21. National University also swept Adamson University, 25-15, 25-23, 25-18.
University of the Philippines capped Thursday's games with another sweep against the University of the East, 25-19, 25-23, 25-23.
On Friday, the league will shift to basketball as La Salle's men's basketball team will go against UP in a rubber match for the remaining Finals slot. Volleyball action will return on Saturday.
