UST beats La Salle for twice-to-beat bonus


University of Santo Tomas defeated De La Salle University, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-15, on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum to secure the twice-to-beat bonus heading into the UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball Final Four.

Angge Poyos had 22 points anchored on 18 attacks, three blocks, and an ace, while Jonna Perdido had 19 points as the Golden Tigresses finished the elimination round with 12 wins and two losses.

With the win, UST finished in the second spot behind no. 1 squad National University who also has a 12-2 card, but has 36 points. UST had 34 points.

Shevana Laput had 26 points, while Angel Canino returned from injury with 13 points in the loss which saw the Lady Spikers finish the double round robin with 11 wins and three losses for the no. 3 spot.

UST and La Salle will still face off in the Final Four as the former tries to reclaim the crown it last had in 2010, while the latter tries to continue its title defense.

Twice-to-beat NU, meanwhile, will go against no. 4 FEU.

In the men's division, the Green Spikers took down the Golden Spikers, 25-20, 25-27, 25-20, 25-18, to force a playoff for the no. 2 seed.

The La Salle men's team finished with 11 wins and three losses, tied with NU.

UST, which capped its elimination campaign with eight wins and six losses, will face top-seeded FEU which finished with a 12-2 card.

Earlier, the University of the East women's team (3-11) concluded its season with a 23-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-22 win over University of the Philippines (1-13), while the UP men's volleyball team (2-12) defeated UE (1-13), 25-19, 18-25, 14-25, 25-20, 15-9.
