Senate honors PHL national volleyball teams for international feats
The Senate on Monday adopted a proposed resolution commending the Philippines women’s national volleyball team for bringing in medals from two international competitions.
Senate Resolution (SR) No. 1183 filed by Senators Pia Cayetano and Alan Cayetano congratulated Alas Pilipinas for bagging a bronze medal in their first-ever podium finish at the 2024 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Challenge Cup and for delivering back-to-back bronze medals at the 2024 Southeast Asian Volleyball League.
“The remarkable performance of the Alas Pilipinas has brought pride and honor to the country, serving as a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion of the players, coaching staff, and everyone involved in the development of Philippine volleyball,” the resolution read.
“The achievements of the Philippine Women's National Volleyball Team at the AVC Challenge Cup and SEA V-League are significant contributions to the country's sports history, inspiring a new generation of athletes to strive for excellence in their respective fields,” it added.
Men’s team
Likewise, the senators commended the Philippine men’s national volleyball team for winning back-to-back bronze medals at the 2024 Men’s Southeast Asian Volleyball League under proposed SR No. 1182.
On August 18, Alas Pilipinas secured a bronze medal in the first leg of the SEA V. League in Manila, marking the team's historic first-ever podium finish since joining the regional tournament in 2023.
They advanced to the semi-finals of the second leg of the tournament on August 25 and won their second bronze medal against Vietnam.
The Alas Pilipinas was ranked World. No. 64 as of May 2024.
“The victory of Alas Pilipinas highlights the growing competitiveness and establishes the prominence of Philippine volleyball in the region, marking a significant achievement that fosters national unity, inspiring countless Filipinos, and ultimately contributing to the promotion of sports and nation-building in the country,” the resolution said.
Apart from commendation, the winning athletes are set to receive cash awards from the two senators.
"As an athlete myself, I understand the hard work and sacrifice that go into representing our country on the international stage,” said Senator Pia.
“The Philippines is a volleyball-loving nation, and Alas Pilipinas gave us more reason to be passionate about the sport. They are proof that when given the right opportunities, Filipino athletes can compete with the best in the world," the senator added. —Sundy Locus/LDF, GMA Integrated News
