La Salle Lady Spikers sweep FEU for 4th straight win; Ateneo escapes UE in five-setter

De La Salle University swept Far Eastern University, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22, to extend its winning streak to four in the UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Shevana Laput had 22 points from 18 attacks, three blocks, and an ace to lead the Lady Spikers. Alleiah Malaluan and Angel Canino added 12 and 10 points, respectively, as the Taft-based squad improved to 5-2 to end its first round campaign.

“Happy ako kasi kahit hindi kami halos nakapagpahinga and then halos wala kami time para mag-aral para sa FEU, at least doon sa short time na ‘yon, nagawa nila 'yung mga pinag-aralan namin at nakasunod sila doon sa game plan. 'Yung focus nila, nandoon pa rin hanggang sa matapos yung game,” La Salle head coach Ramil de Jesus said.

Faida Bakanke led the Lady Tamaraws with nine points, while Gerz Petallo added eight points as FEU slipped to 4-3.

Earlier, Ateneo de Manila University escaped University of the East, 20-25, 25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 15-13.

AC Miner had 23 points anchored on 20 attacks and three blocks, while Mitzi Pacia and Lyann de Guzman had 17 points apiece as the Blue Eagles notched their second win in the season.

The win spoiled Nessa Bangayan's 24-point outing as a win remained elusive for the Lady Warriors.

In the men's division, FEU completed a first round sweep as it defeated La Salle (4-3), 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-19.

Ateneo (4-3), meanwhile, swept UE (0-7), 25-21, 25-19, 25-16.
