FEU draws first blood against NU in UAAP men's volleyball finals
Far Eastern University drew first blood against National University, 22-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-22, 15-13, in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 87 men's volleyball finals on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Tamaraws dealt NU its first finals loss since Season 79 in 2017 when Ateneo de Manila University bagged the title.
After FEU survived a tough challenge from NU in the fourth set, the two teams were neck-and-neck in the final set as they played catchup with Dryx Saavedra and Amet Bituin leading the offense for FEU, while Peng Taguibolos led the Bulldogs' late rally.
Errors, however, plagued National U's late-game attempt as FEU took a 12-10 lead after a service error by Jeffe Gallego. NU inched closer, eventually, 13-12, thanks to Greg Ancheta, but Buds Buddin's error also added to their woes as FEU reached match point. Jade Disquitado salvaged one for the Bulldogs, but it was Bituin who starred and sealed the victory for the Tamaraws.
Saavedra led FEU with 25 points from 21 attacks, three blocks, and an ace, while Bituin had 16 points from 13 attacks and three blocks.
Leo Ordiales had 23 points anchored on 22 attacks, while Disquitado had 17 points for NU.
Game 2 of the best-of-three finals will be played on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
