Ike Barilea’s family mourns death of Alas Pilipinas player in road accident

The family of Alas Pilipinas pool player Ike Barilea is mourning the loss of the young volleyball athlete, who passed away last Tuesday at the age of 21.

According to a report by GMA Regional TV’s Adrian Prietos on 24 Oras on Thursday, police said Barilea died after his motorcycle collided with a bus in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental. He sustained injuries to his chest and back.

“Na-miscalculate niya at natamaan ang biktima. Hindi niya natantya at nahagip ang likurang bahagi ng motorsiklo at tumilapon,” said PLt. Mansueto de Jose, deputy chief of the Cadiz City Police Station, in the local language.

Angelic Barilea, Ike’s aunt, had a message for the bus driver.

“Sa driver naman, sana hindi mo binangga,” Angelic said in her native tongue. “Ang sakit-sakit talaga.”

Meanwhile, Ike’s grandmother Cheryl Javier expressed her grief, saying: “Kung puwede lang sana, ako na lang kunin, hindi siya.”

Police said the bus driver has been released after the lapse of the reglementary period.

However, the family is now processing a reckless imprudence resulting in homicide complaint against the driver and is waiting for Ike’s mother, who is currently in Manila.
