UAAP: Abegail Segui shows signs of promise in maiden women's volleyball win

Spreading her wings for the first time in UAAP women’s volleyball, Adamson University rookie Abegail Segui showcased what the Lady Falcons faithful can expect from her this season and beyond.

Getting the starting nod against Ateneo de Manila University, the first year player steadily finished with eight points and five excellent digs.

More importantly however, Segui provided another offensive threat to the already promising Adamson artillery throughout the matchup.

Having a first taste of UAAP seniors action, the 20-year-old is glad to see her offseason work bear fruit; while also acknowledging the potential for more improvement.

“Siyempre first year, it wasn’t easy for me. Kasi 'yung sa process mahirap, sa off-season sinusubok talaga…One step at a time lang kami, one game at a time. 'Yung mga lapses na nangyari ngayon, iwo-workout namin sa training para next game maayos na yun,” said Segui.

Reuniting with former high-school teammates Shaina Nitura and Felicity Sagaysay, the opposite hitter enters an Adamson fold which missed out on a Final Four berth last season with a 6-8 win-loss record.

Attempting to carry over their winning ways in the seniors ranks, Nitura has high hopes for Segui and the rest of her team.

“Sabi nga namin, since back in high school, that [was] the plan already. To be complete in college. Nagbabakasakali kami na maiangat namin yung chemistry na nabuo namin noong high school to college,” said the reigning rookie of the year.

“Let’s see kung paano po kami makakabuo ng chemistry and ng history through our people na prinovide sa amin ni Lord,” added Nitura.

Acknowledging the new responsibilities she will have to carry throughout her rookie season, Segui takes comfort in familiarity while navigating the next level.

“Pressure is there talaga. Pero hinahayaan ko lang, naglalaro lang ako maayos and nagte-training ng maayos. Syempre, nandito sina coach, sina Shai [Nitura] na nag-guide sa akin every training,” shared Segui.

“So ngayong game, wala akong ginawa kundi maglaro [at] gagampanan ko 'yung role as an opposite, and kung paano ko i-lift up yung iba ko ring kasama.”
