UAAP: La Salle survives late UST rally to go 2-0 in women’s volleyball

De La Salle University fended off a late rally from the University of Santo Tomas, 25-14, 25-15, 26-24, in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

After a dominant performance in the first two sets, UST threatened to force another set, taking a 23-22 lead before Xyza Gula pushed the España-based crew to set point.

However, La Salle fought back, thanks to a misfired attack after that, then Shevana Laput claimed the last two points to seal the victory for the Lady Spikers.

Laput led the way with 21 points built on 17 attacks, four blocks, while Angel Canino added 13 points from nine attacks, three blocks, and an ace as the Lady Spikers improved to 2-0.

Eshana Nunag had 16 excellent sets and chipped in three points for the Taft-based squad.

“Talagang ginusto manalo ng mga bata kaya ’yun ang resulta,” La Salle assistant coach Noel Orcullo said.

Angge Poyos, meanwhile, paced UST with 16 points on 13 attacks, two blocks, and an ace, along with six receptions and two digs, as the Golden Tigresses fell to 0-2.
