UAAP: UST sweeps Ateneo to break through in women’s volleyball

The University of Santo Tomas swept Ateneo de Manila University, 26-24, 25-18, 25-21, to barge into the win column of the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Golden Tigresses dominated the second and third sets after escaping the Blue Eagles in the first set, with the match done after an hour and 39 minutes.

Angge Poyos paced the Golden Tigresses with 21 points built on 19 attacks, one block, and an ace, along with three receptions and one dig. Reg Jurado added a double-double of 12 points and 12 digs for the España-based squad who improved to 1-2.

For UST head coach Shaq delos Santos, the win will serve as an inspiration to them, especially as they head to their own campus' Quadricentennial Pavillion when they play the University of the East on Saturday.

Ana Hermosura led the Blue Eagles with eight points to go with 10 digs and three receptions, while Donna de Leon chipped in 10 points as Ateneo remained winless through three games.
