UAAP: La Salle, sans Shevana Laput, sweeps UP to stay unbeaten in women's volleyball
De La Salle University, playing without Shevana Laput, swept the University of the Philippines, 25-12, 25-15, 25-19, to secure its third straight win in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
La Salle head coach Ramil de Jesus said Laput is currently ill and awaiting medical clearance.
In the first set, the Lady Spikers led by as big as 11, 12-1, before eventually claiming the first set. UP then fought back in the next two sets, but La Salle was just too much for the Fighting Maroons as the match ended after an hour and 22 minutes.
“Siguro natututo na doon sa first two games namin na palaging pagdating ng third set magre-relax. So ngayon, ni-remind ko lang sila na kailangan kung ano 'yung mindset doon sa first set hanggang third set dapat gan'on din,” said La Salle head coach Ramil de Jesus.
Stepping up in Laput's absence, Mikee Santos delivered 10 points built on eight attacks and two blocks, along with two digs. Angel Canino paced the Lady Spikers with 12 points as La Salle improved to 3-0.
Casiey Dongallo led the Fighting Maroons with six points, while Niña Ytang, Irah Jaboneta, and Jelai Gajero added four points each.
UP dropped to 2-1.
