UAAP: La Salle beats UE for first win; UST sweeps Adamson in men’s volleyball

De La Salle University finally broke through in the UAAP Season 88 men’s volleyball tournament after a 27-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-17 victory over the University of the East on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Chris Hernandez paced the Green Spikers with 17 points along with nine receptions and five digs, while Eugene Gloria and Issa Ousseini added 15 points each as the Taft-based squad improved to 1-4.

“Gaya ng binabanggit ko sa team, [our record] does not mean we are down by four. Kailangan talaga trabahuin namin kung ano yung need punuan, pupunuan namin para makuha namin ang game na ito,” La Salle head coach Jose Roque said.

“Talagang trabaho lang talaga kami. Whether three-set loss, four sets, or five sets, kung ano lang ‘yung kailangan namin punuan, pupunuan namin. We’re still learning kung anong adjustments, and at the same time encouraging them na we have to play better than the last game,” he added.

The win spoiled a huge outing from Raquim Aceron, who delivered 30 points and 21 receptions for the Red Warriors, who fell to 1-5.

Meanwhile, the University of Santo Tomas swept Adamson University, 25-16, 25-20, 25-22.

Josh Ybañez led the Golden Spikers with 15 points and 13 receptions as UST improved to 4-1.

For Adamson, Richard Besorio finished with seven points while Andrew Tahiluddin added four as the Falcons dropped to 1-4.
