UAAP: UST rallies past UP to return to win column in women’s volleyball

The University of Santo Tomas bounced back from a slow start to defeat University of the Philippines, 16-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-20, in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The victory put UST back in the win column after a loss to Adamson University last Saturday.

Angge Poyos led the Golden Tigresses with 24 points built on 20 attacks, three blocks, and an ace, while also tallying seven digs and six receptions. Reg Jurado added 16 points as UST improved to a 3-3 record.

“Ginawa lang namin sa team, lalo nung second set, ginising namin sila. Then again, of course, ‘yung bawi talaga kasi kung titingnan natin, itong game na ito ang magdidikta kung ano ‘yung kapalaran namin sa first round,” said UST assistant coach Yani Fernandez.

“’Yung tapang bumalik na, pero siyempre hindi pa rin kami magpapakampante doon sa performance nila. Still, mayroong mga kailangang trabahuhin.”

For UP, Nina Ytang finished with 14 points and three digs, while Jelai Gajero added 12 markers as the Fighting Maroons dropped to a similar 3-3 slate.
