UAAP: La Salle downs NU, completes women’s volleyball first-round sweep

De La Salle University defeated National University, 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17, to complete a first-round sweep in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.

The victory also marked the Lady Spikers’ first win over the Lady Bulldogs after a five-game losing skid.

Shevana Laput led the Taft-based squad with 19 points built on 15 attacks, three blocks, and an ace, along with eight digs. Angel Canino added 14 points from 11 attacks, two aces, and a block, while also tallying 10 receptions and six digs.

La Salle head coach Ramil de Jesus, however, said the tournament still has a long way to go.

“Matagal naming pinaghandaan ito, so itong first round na ito, hindi mo masasabi na ito na ‘yun kasi mahaba pa ang tournament eh. Para sa akin kasi, gulatan lang sa first round and then second round, ayun na nandoon na lahat… Doon na talaga magkikita, basahan na kasi eh,” said La Salle head coach Ramil de Jesus. “Masuwerte lang kami kasi nakauna kami ng mga panalo.”

Sam Cantada paced the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points from 10 attacks, two blocks, and an ace, while Chamy Maaya contributed 10 points built on seven attacks, two blocks, and an ace.

With the win, La Salle improved to 7-0, while NU remained in second place at 5-2.
