UAAP: Josh Ybañez turns emotional after UST exit despite forthcoming MVP award
University of Santo Tomas standout Josh Ybañez became emotional as he spoke about his forthcoming Most Valuable Player recognition and the team’s Final Four exit in the UAAP Season 88 men’s volleyball tournament.
Ybañez is poised to earn his third MVP award in his collegiate career, but the Golden Spikers bowed out after a semifinal loss to twice-to-beat National University on Wednesday.
“Sa now, pinakita ko, to be honest, I really don’t feel na…” Ybañez said before breaking down in tears during the post-match press conference after UST fell, 25-21, 30-28, 25-19.
UST head coach Odjie Mamon quickly offered words of encouragement.
“It was just one game, Josh. You carried us throughout,” Mamon said as he consoled his star player.

Teammate Gboy de Vega also expressed his support.
“I say he deserves it,” de Vega said. “We just had a bad day today, and I think this will help mold him into a better person and a better player.”
“Sobrang hate ko lang kasi, kung kailan ako pinakakailangan…” Ybañez added, expressing frustration over the timing of the loss.
Ybañez finished with nine points, 16 receptions, and four digs in the defeat.
Despite the result, Mamon emphasized his pride in the team’s effort this season.
“Masama sa pakiramdam na talo, but I’m proud of the players. Of course, we have to give credit to our opponents—they brought their A game and wanted it more,” he said.
