UAAP: NU outlasts FEU, moves a win away from sixth straight men’s volleyball title

National University showcased its championship composure, outlasting Far Eastern University, 21-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 15-8, in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 88 men’s volleyball best-of-three finals on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Bulldogs trailed two sets to one before taking control in the fourth to force a deciding fifth set.

NU came out strong in the final frame, racing to an 8-2 lead. Dryx Saavedra sparked a brief FEU rally with a block, followed by a hit from Jade Disquitado. Amet Bituin then scored back-to-back points, while Mikko Espartero cut the deficit to three.

Leo Ordiales pushed NU to double digits, 10-6, before Saavedra answered with a point off the block. Buds Buddin restored a four-point cushion, 11-7, but Espartero kept the Tamaraws within striking distance.

The Bulldogs, however, closed the match with a decisive 4-0 run, capped by Peng Taguibolos.

Disquitado led NU with 21 points built on attacks, along with 20 excellent receptions and nine digs. Ordiales added 22 points, while Buddin contributed 20 points, 18 receptions, and seven digs.

For FEU, Saavedra finished with 20 points, while Espartero chipped in 14.
