Alas Pilipinas Girls take down Mexico for historic FIVB U17 World Championship win

The Alas Pilipinas Girls seized a breakthrough win in the FIVB Volleyball Girls U17 World Championship after taking down Mexico, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23, on Friday in Chile.

Young outside spiker Caera Celis led the way with 24 points anchored on 22 attacks, one block, and one ace while Xyz Ellen Rayco churned out 15 markers built on 12 attacks, two aces, and one block.

Opposite spiker Jhaynna Love Bulandres and middle blocker Cristina Gale each chipped in 10 points as the Philippines improved to 1-1 in Pool B after falling to China in the opening game with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-13 loss.

The Alas Pilipinas Girls also became only the second Philippine team to secure a win on a world championship stage after the Alas Pilipinas Men squad in the previous FIVB men’s worlds in Manila.

The Alas Girls will next face Tunisia as they look to capture back-to-back wins.
