BORN TO BE WILD
“Philippine Croc” and “Bali’s Biggest Catch”
Finale on Wednesday, April 10

In Bali, Indonesia, Doc Nielsen Donato comes face to face with not one, but several ocean giants—the manta rays. In Indonesia, manta rays thrive and are even caught on a daily basis just off coastal waters. It is said that some decades ago, the Philippines’ fish catch was as large as Indonesia’s is today. But over the years, increasing pressure on Philippine seas caused fish catch to go down in key areas.

Doc Nielsen Donato recalls living onboard a sea vessel for a week last year; he witnessed tuna fishermen from General Santos City coming home empty-handed after days in high seas. Some of the fishermen admitted to crossing the Indonesian border in order to catch big fish. This week, Doc Nielsen’s investigation finally concludes as he discovers the similarities—and the differences—between two giant fishing industries in Southeast Asia.

Meanwhile, Doc Ferds Recio continues to monitor the release of thirty-six Philippine crocodiles in their new home in Siargao Island.

The critically endangered Philippine crocodile, perhaps the rarest in the world, now has a chance to recover its population through introduction to a new habitat. But not all are excited about the idea.

Local residents who rely on the marsh for livelihood and water seem uneasy with their new neighbors. Doc Ferds Recio helps shed light on this important issue: the balance between human safety and wildlife preservation.
