Some gas stations in Maasin City in Southern Leyte have closed after gasoline supply ran out, a television report said Tuesday.

According to Bam Alegre's report on GMA News TV's News To Go, Southern Leyte Governor Roger Mercado said replenishment may come on Wednesday.

But the report said that despite the lack of supply, situation remains peaceful as military personnel are monitoring the security in Southern Leyte.

Meanwhile, the report added that the province suffered no casulaties, even if it was on the path of super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) that unleashed 235 kph winds upon landfall on Friday in Eartern Visayas.

The local government are now accepting relief goods to be distributed to nearby areas, including Tacloban and Ormoc, Alegre reported, noting that the province may serve as a drop-off point of relief goods.

On Monday, hundreds of soldiers and police poured into typhoon-hit Tacloban City to try to contain looting that threatens an emergency relief effort in the area.

An earlier Agence France-Presse report said more than 10,000 people were feared to have died when one of the strongest storms on record sent tsunami-like waves and brutal winds tearing across large swathes of the Philippine archipelago Friday, with the city of Tacloban one of the worst-hit areas.

Rescue workers were struggling to deliver desperately needed aid to thousands of hungry and homeless survivors in Tacloban, a city of 220,000 and the capital of Leyte province, the same AFP report said. — Amanda Fernandez with Agence France-Presse/RSJ, GMA News
