A sneak peek at the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 5's specs

After having recently launched the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, Samsung is hard at work on its next high-end big smartphone: the Galaxy Note 5 phablet.

SamMobile cited source who said there may be only one variant of the Galaxy Note 5, which may feature Samsung's new all-in-one Exynos 7422 processor.

"The Exynos 7422 is expected to be the company’s first ever all-in-one solution (ePoP) as it will combine the CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, and modem on a single chip," SamMobile said.

While the Galaxy Alpha had a similar solution inside, it only combined the RAM and storage at the time, SamMobile noted.

Other features of the upcoming phablet include a 2K or a 4K flat-screen Super AMOLED display, and Samsung's homegrown modem.

Project Zen

Meanwhile, Samsung is also working on a replacement for the Galaxy Note Edge - internally codenamed ‘Project Zen’ for now.

SamMobile said this could be more than just a curved screen variant of the Galaxy Note 5, adding its hardware may not be completely high-end.

Among its rumored features are:

  • 5.4- to 5.5-inch Super AMOLED dual-edge curved display
  • an S Pen
  • hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor
  • 16GB storage
  • 16-megapixel primary camera with OIS
  • 8-megapixel front-facing camera

New chipset in testing

SamMobile also cited its insider who said Samsung is now testing some Galaxy Note 5 units with a new Exynos 7430 chipset.

But the chip for now is an engineering sample and may not be released for consumers for the moment, it said.

Also, SamMobile said Samsung may be working on prototype display systems, including 2K and 4K displays.
