FIT announces ‘Salita ng Taon’ nominees

The Filipinas Institute of Translation Inc. (FIT) on Sunday revealed the list of nominees for the word of the year set to be declared next month during the Sawikaan 2016.

Among the nominees for word of the year are "netizen," "bully," "foundling," "hugot," "lumad," "meme," "fotobam," "viral," "tukod," and "milenyal."

FIT said these words are among the most used through gaming technology, television, social media, and news and current events for the past year.

Previous word of the year winners include selfie (2014), wangwang (2012), jejemon (2010), and miskol (2007).

The word of the year will be announced on the afternoon of October 6, during the Sawikaan 2016 event in Quezon City.

The Sawikaan event is in partnership with the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and the University of the Philippines College of Education. —ALG, GMA News
