Negros Occ’s Bago City declares state of calamity - report
Bago City in Negros Occidental declared a state of calamity over the weekend after the provinceâs estimated damage to crops caused by rains from typhoon âGoring" reached P18.7 million. Online news site, Visayan Daily Star on Saturday reported that Bago City was the third local government unit after San Enrique and Valladolid towns to make such declaration. The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist reported that the flooding also destroyed P18,130,535 worth of palay and vegetables. The areas with palay destruction were identified as Bago City - P7,718,324, Valladolid - P6,353,831 of which P450,000 were vegetables, San Enrique - P2,310,163, Pontevedra - P1,371,896, Pulupandan - P289,651, Murcia - P46,548, Isabela - P28,060 and La Carlota City - P12,059. The Office of the Provincial Veterinarian reported that livestock and poultry worth P644,230 were lost during the flooding in Pontevedra, Pulupandan, Kabankalan, San Enrique, Valladolid, La Carlota City, Bago City and Murcia. Affected by flooding in five towns and one city of the province were 9,482 families or 47,410 individuals, but waters subsided in most areas Friday as the week-long rains began to ease. Those affected included 487 families in EB Magalona, 2,579 in Valladolid, 3,916 in San Enrique, 1,950 in Pulupandan, 533 in Ilog and 17 in Bago City. Valladolid municipal agriculturist Giovanni Robles wrote to Gov. Joseph Marañon asking for assistance for the farmers affected by the floods. He said insecticides, fungicides, vegetable and rice seeds were needed by the farmers in Valladolid. - GMANews.TV
