The suspect in the killing of Ombudsman Assistant Special Prosecutor Madonna Joy Tanyag was killed Saturday when he allegedly tried to grab a gun from his police escort at a Quezon City camp.

Suspect Angelito Avenido Jr., 31, was supposed to be transferred to the Quezon City Jail from Camp Karingal when the incident happened, according to a report by Jonathan Andal on Super Radyo dzBB.

Citing initial information from the Quezon City Police District Office (QCPD), Super Radyo dzBB said Avenido was moved outside of his cell and was brought to the second floor of the CIDU Building inside Camp Karingal together with five other inmates for a police booking procedure.

However, the suspect attempted to grab the gun of his police escort, prompting the police to take action.

The firearm went off, and the suspect was shot.

Avenido was brought to the East Avenue Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival.

According to the staff at the hospital, the suspect had gunshot wounds between his neck and chin.

It was not yet clear whether Avenido was hand-cuffed when the incident happened. Police investigation on the incident is ongoing.
