UP Law wins world's biggest moot court competition

The University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law won this year's Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition, the biggest and most prestigious competition for law students all over the world.

According to a report on "24 Oras'' Tuesday, over 600 teams from over 100 countries joined the competition.

The UP team was represented by Chinzen Viernes, Pauline Sagayo, Mary Regine Dadole, Pauline De Leon, and Ignacio Villareal, who was also named Best Oralist.

"Winning the world championship was a dream. Sometimes, you think it's an unrealistic dream. It's still very surreal," Ignacio said.

"There were also four other Philippine teams who joined us in the national round, and it shows na the quality of the legal education in the Philippines as a whole is very good, and nakikipagsabayan talaga tayo with other universities na mas funded, na mas may resources," Chinzen said.

UP Law Dean Atty. Darlene Berberabe congratulated the team for a job well done at the competition.

"To be pitted against the best of the best in this international competition, talagang napakalaking karangalan ang ibinigay nila sa UP Law, sa UP community, at sa buong Pilipinas," she said.

UP last won the competition for the Philippines in 1995. In 2004, the Ateneo Law team also bagged the award for the country.
