Jellyfish bloom observed along Taytay, Palawan coastline

The coastline along the town of Taytay in Palawan seem to have turned pink because of the presence of numerous tomato jellyfish, according to a report on "State of the Nation" on Wednesday.

The jellyfish bloom is caused by the presence of the Philippine Tomato Jellyfish in the area. Each of the said jellyfish weighs about two kilograms and is as big as a plate.

According to marine biologist Dr. Sheldon Rey Boco, the said type of jellyfish is not deadly. Although they are noticeably numerous during summer or at the start of the dry months.

The public should be cautious around this type of jellyfish as these still contain a toxin or poison.

There is evidence that the emergence and increase in the number of tomato jellyfish and is sometimes linked to the marine heat wave.

The jellyfish bloom also occurs with the increase of the ocean's temperature and the effect of climate change. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
