Habagat in Metro Manila: Floodwaters nearly reach basketball hoop, poor visibility

The Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat, brought heavy rains and flooding to parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, and the Visayas on Saturday.

In Makati City, visibility was near zero at around 1 p.m. Youscooper Trisha reported that the rain initially began normally before the clouds thickened and brought a heavy downpour. High-rise buildings were barely visible.

Meanwhile, floodwaters submerged streets in San Pedro and San Felipe in San Isidro, Parañaque City. Despite the increase in leptospirosis cases, children were seen playing in the floodwaters. Other residents had to ride boats with rescuers to safely navigate the flooded streets.

In Kaingin Bukid, Barangay Apolonia Samson, Quezon City, floodwaters nearly reached the height of a basketball hoop at around 1:32 p.m. The Quezon City government had earlier ordered forced evacuations in several areas, including Barangay Apolonia Samson.

PAGASA said Habagat rains are expected to continue over Luzon in the coming days due to a low pressure area inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) that has a high chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours. —Jean Mangaluz/VBL, GMA News
