Unhealthy air quality recorded in several Metro Manila areas — DENR-EMB

Several areas in Metro Manila recorded elevated levels of particulate matter (PM) 2.5 on Sunday morning, with air quality reaching levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) said.

The DENR-EMB said the observed haze may be associated with smoke and transboundary haze from ongoing fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia, which may have been transported toward the Philippines by prevailing winds.

As of 8 a.m., unhealthy air quality was recorded at nine monitoring stations in Metro Manila:

  • Valenzuela
  • Quezon City (Ateneo)
  • Marikina (Parang)
  • San Juan City
  • Mandaluyong
  • Taguig (TUP)
  • Pasay
  • Parañaque (PEATC)
  • Las Piñas

Meanwhile, air quality was classified as “fair” in the following areas:

  • Navotas
  • Pateros
  • Parañaque (Don Bosco)
  • Muntinlupa (Filinvest City)
  • Muntinlupa (Bilibid)

The fires in Kalimantan began in August. Air quality in Metro Manila, however, started to improve in early September following a shift in wind direction.

The DENR-EMB previously reported improvements in air quality in several Metro Manila areas amid the haze from Indonesia.

The agency advised the public to minimize prolonged outdoor activities, particularly in areas visibly affected by haze.

“Persons sensitive to air pollution, including children, older persons, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, are advised to limit outdoor exposure and take necessary precautions,” the DENR-EMB said.

The public is also advised to wear face masks, particularly N95 masks, in areas affected by the haze.— MCG, GMA News
