Some 400 kilos of "hot" meat were seized in Taguig City before dawn Friday, with authorities suspecting some of the meat were imported.

The National Meat Inspection Service also seized a yellow lamp that made the meat appear fresh, radio dzBB's Roland Bola reported.

Inspected by the NMIS was the Bicutan Market in Taguig City, the report said.

Dr. Randy Lontoc of the NMIS said the vendors selling the meat may be held liable for violating an administrative order penalizing the improper handling of frozen and chilled meat products.

An initial investigation showed the seized meat was a mix of chicken and pork.

The NMIS is actively inspecting markets during the holidays to check for tainted meat, as demand for meat is expected to go up at this time.

On Thursday, the NMIS seized before dawn some 114 kilos of potentially tainted processed meat in a market in Quezon City.

The meat was placed outside a freezer where it could have been spoiled or contaminated, according to a team from the NMIS.

In Thursday's incident, the meat was found at the Commonwealth Market in Quezon City.

Lontoc cited initial reports reaching him indicating some of the meat was placed on the cement floor.

He said this could subject the meat to high temperature and may cause it to spoil. — RSJ, GMA News
