The first day of school in 2012 was relatively incident-free, but with many students still absent from classes in some schools in Metro Manila.
In Quezon City, only about half of students were present at morning classes at the Ramon Magsaysay High School in Cubao, radio dzBB's Manny Vargas reported.
A similar situation was noted in the morning classes at the Batasan High School also in Quezon City, the report added.
The report quoted school officials as saying they expect attendance to normalize next week, as many students expect this week to be spent cleaning the classrooms.
In Manila, a similar low attendance was noted at the Araullo High School along United Nations Avenue, dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported.
The report noted many students were merely asked to help clean the school's classrooms for the day.
Manila police secured the area near the school to thwart would-be criminals who may prey on the students.
The Department of Education earlier maintained classes would resume on Jan. 3 in public elementary and high schools.
A separate dzBB report said some private schools have scheduled the resumption of classes for later this week, or next week. –KG, GMA News
