Fish, vegetable prices go up as Holy Week demand rises
With demand for fish and vegetables going up during Holy Week, prices of the commodities started to rise Tuesday in markets in Metro Manila.
In Pasay City, vendors at the Libertad Public Market raised prices of fish and vegetables—some by more than twice the price, radio dzBB's Sam Nielsen reported.
The report quoted the vendors as citing high demand as a major reason for the price hike.
Catholics are expected to abstain from meat during Holy Week, especially on Good Friday, as they commemorate the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ.
The dzBB report said that as of Tuesday, prices of bell pepper went up from P60 a kilo to as high as P180 per kilo.
Calamansi prices increased from P40 to P70 a kilo, while that of celery rose from P50 to P80 a kilo.
Eggplant prices went up from P25 to P40, while that of Baguio beans jumped from P40 to P50 a kilo. Ginger prices crept up as well from P35 to P40 a kilo.
Garlic prices also increased from P50 to P60.
On the other hand, tilapia prices have gone up from P70 to P80 a kilo, while bangus previously sold at P90 are now going for P120 per kilo. Dilis prices also rose from P80 to P120 per kilo.
Prices of carrots remained stable at P40 a kilo, okra at P30, ampalaya at P45, potato at P40, cabbage at P25, onion at P50, tomato at P40, and broccoli at P120 per kilo. –KG, GMA News
