A local government operation backed by the police to demolish stalls at a flea market in Parañaque City erupted in violence Monday as stall owners, residents, and their supporters threw rocks and home-made explosives at police.
Cops charged back, hitting protesters with truncheons, firing guns, and arresting several protesters, some of whom were seen on TV being struck by angry policemen. "Nakaaresto kami ng 15, dadalhin sa headquarters namin at iimbestigahan," said Senior Superintendent Benliner Capili of the Parañaque police. He said authorities are also investigating the death of a civilian, Arnel Leonor, who suffered a head injury during the skirmish. Hours after the violent confrontation, the demolition of stalls finally pushed through after noon Monday.
Reports reaching Camp Crame in Quezon City said four policemen were hurt when militants at the Silverio Compound threw rocks, molotov bombs, bottles, and pillboxes at them.
It said the residents “even attempted to burn police cars and fire trucks.”
Official reports said the violence started at about 10 a.m. Monday. when residents blocked Sucat Road by burning tires to protest the demolition at Silverio Compound While the sheriff was negotiating with residents of the compound, “militant groups numbering about 1,500 suddenly broke ranks and assaulted police ranks located some 100 meters away. After minutes of attack, our elements charged back under cover of teargas. By 1130, we have recovered Sucat Road,” the police report said.
A separate report on radio dzBB Monday afternoon said security at the compound was tight as Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams watched out against troublemakers.
No more violent incident was reported as of 1 p.m. as the tension had subsided, the report said.
