NDRRMC invites public to 'watch' garbage pileup at Manila Bay

Disaster management officials on Monday invited the public to go to Manila Bay to see for themselves the amount of garbage they have collectively—and carelessly—thrown away.

 

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the garbage had been collected by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority in past days.

 

NDRRMC head Benito Ramos said the sight should heighten consciousness about the consequences of carelessly disposing of garbage, radio dzBB's Benjie Liwanag Jr. reported.

 

Ramos was also quoted in the report as asking the public not to allow Manila Bay to gain a new reputation as offering a view not of the sunset but of garbage.  

In past days, the MMDA had collected at least 200 truckloads of garbage after nearly a week of cleanup operations.

 

A separate report by dzBB's Manny Vargas said the MMDA expects to gather more garbage from Manila Bay in the next few days. –KG, GMA News
