Following the rain from the monsoon enhanced by Tropical Storm Helen (Kai-Tak), the water level at the Marikina River on Wednesday reached the first alert level by breaching the 15-meter level.

The city public information office noted the rise in the river's water level on its Twitter account Wednesday afternoon.

"ABISO MARIKENYO> AUG. 15, 2012. As of 3:45 p.m. ang water level sa #MarikinaRiver ay umakyat sa 15.2 meters above sea level mula 15.1 meters (Advisory to Marikina residents: As of 3:45 p.m., the water level at Marikina River reached 15.2 meters above sea level from 15.1 meters)," it said.

It said the river's water level had reached 15.0 meters as of 2:18 p.m.

The river's water level was only 14.9 meters shortly before 2 p.m., the city government added.

Under the city's alarm level, Alarm Level 1 is raised if the water level is between 15 to 16 meters (Warning).

Alarm Level 2 (prepare) is raised when the water level goes above 16 to 17 meters. Alarm Level 3 (voluntary evacuate) is raised when the Water level goes beyond 17 meters.

The highest level, 4, is raised when the water level goes beyond 18 meters and will entail forced evacuation.
Last Aug. 9, authorities conducted a forced evacuation of residents near the river after its water level reached 20.5 meters — way above the critical level of 18 meters.

Authorities also ordered power cut off to three villages at risk of being flooded by the swelling Marikina River.

Local village officials said at the time that most of those to be evacuated included those who returned from evacuation centers to clean their homes, or those who stayed behind to guard against looters. — RSJ, GMA News
