Some 800 kilos of "botcha" or tainted meat was found and confiscated in Manila's Divisoria district before dawn Sunday.

National Meat Inspection Service operatives acting on a tip found the meat near the corner of Juan Luna Street and C.M. Recto Avenue, radio dzBB reported.

The seized items included "double-dead" pork and expired imported meat. The meat was placed in bayongs, sacks and basins.

But the team failed to make any arrest as no one was seen near the containers, the report said.

Following the seizure, the NMIS reminded the public to be careful in buying meat especially as the New Year nears.

The NMIS said it expects unscrupulous parties to exploit the high demand for meat at this time of the year to sell tainted meat.

It noted tainted meat is usually sold cheaper than fresh meat.  — ELR, GMA News
